1/01/2009 - 2/02/2009Marinera Festival
Trujillo,
Peru
Argentina has tango, while Peru has marinera - among many other popular dance forms. This is one of the most stylised and refined, with a great deal of coyness and flirting displayed between partners who manipulate a handkerchief in twitching, birdlike gestures with one hand while making coquettish dance moves in time to the music. Showy Spanish colonial-style dress is worn by couples from all over the country who come here to compete. During the festival period there are street processions and dancing on the main square here in Peru's second city, famous for its pre-Inca desert kingdoms
