    International Travel:

    Main Airports
    Charlotte/Douglas International (CLT) (website: www.charlotteairport.com) is 13km (8 miles) west of Charlotte (journey time - 15 minutes). To/from the airport: The Charlotte Area Transit System provides a bus service to the metro area, and numerous shuttle services operate to the uptown area, major hotels and most business districts. Fixed-fare taxis are also available. Facilities: Banking services, car
    hire and postal/shipping.

    Raleigh-Durham International (RDU) (website: www.rdu.com) is situated 6km (4 miles) from the Research Triangle Park. To/from the airport: The Raleigh/Durham Shuttle leaves to the city center (journey time - 15 minutes). Taxis are also available. Facilities: Car hire, currency exchange and Internet access.

    Getting There by Rail
    A number of Amtrak (tel: 1 800 872 7245, in the USA only; website: www.amtrak.com) routes pass through the state, including a daily New York-Miami (via Orlando). The ‘Piedmont’ provides a passenger train service from Raleigh to Charlotte. The station in Raleigh is located at 320 West Cabarrus Street, while the Charlotte station can be found at 1914 North Tryon Street.

    Getting There by Road
    North Carolina has a good road network of highways and scenic byways allowing easy access to all parts of the state. Interstate 40 is the major east-west artery, crossing the state from Wilmington on the Atlantic Coast to the Great Smoky Mountains, via Raleigh, Durham and Winston-Salem. A state-wide system of designated Bicycling Highways covers 4,830km (3,000 miles) of roads (website: www.ncdot.org). There are many bus companies serving the area, including Greyhound (tel: 1 800 229 9424, in the USA only; website: www.greyhound.com) services, with stops at many destinations within the state, including Chapel Hill, Charlotte, Durham, Raleigh and Winston-Salem.

    The Triangle Transit Authority (website: www.ridetta.org) provides a bus service between the metropolitan areas of Raleigh, Durham, Cary and Chapel Hill.

    Approximate bus journey times:
    From Raleigh to Richmond is 3-4 hours and to North Charleston is 8 hours. From Durham to Chapel Hill is 35 minutes and to Washington, DC is 6 hours.
