White water rafting and shooting the rapids in kayaks are among the exciting activities possible in this River Festival, a popular three-day event for locals as well as visitors from around the world. A series of competitions with prizes adds spice to the daytime activities, and social festivities follow on in the evenings. The Buller and West Coast are regarded as New Zealand's premier white water regions, and along with several major tributaries, the rivers surround the town of Murchison. Each year offers something different, with the opportunity to join a raft journey through spectacular granite canyons on the Buller's best rafting trip. This is a great social event with an emphasis on fun and participation
