Staged on the site of a doomed native uprising, the Parihaka International Peace Festival takes place in a spot billed as 'one of the country's most important spiritual, political and cultural sites of significance to Maori and people of like mind'. A serious, thoughtful and reflective theme runs through the three days, though laughs are raised at the Comedy Festival, and joyful sounds emanate from the main stages, with music and entertainment acts from around the world. Representatives of many different nations come here 'to celebrate the sacred peace... in song, dance, theatre, film and speaking'. Past visitors have arrived from a wide and diverse range of countries including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Canada, USA, Palestine, Russia, Germany, East Timor, India, Borneo, Australia, Poland and many others.
