The thrills and spills of the rodeo come to Opotiki, on the Bay of Plenty, with a full day of spectacular horse and western type events. Bucking broncos, and the unmissable Open Bull Ride, draw big crowds of around 5,000 spectators as well as the 200 or so competitors, here to try for a share of the biggest rodeo purse in New Zealand. Clowns dice with death as they take their turn in the ring with the bull. The Lone Riders is an all women stunt riding team from Manawatu who put on a fabulous display throughout the lunchtime break. For those who can tear themselves away from the action there are side shows, food and drink stands, a gypsy fair and merchandise stalls, helping to make this an all-round entertainment for all ages.
