11/01/2009 - 11/30/2009Kauri Run
Coromandel,
New Zealand
This 25km (15.5 miles) run has great green credentials, combining rigorous exercise with a tree planting programme. Beginning on a spectacular beach, runners follow tracks and trails up to a high point of 560m (1,840ft) above sea level, with exceptionally beautiful views over the Pacific Coast, Hauraki Gulf and Coromandel Ranges, before descending to Coromandel. Individual runners, walkers and teams of three can take part. This peninsula was once cloaked in giant Kauri trees. The idea is to replace some of those which have been lost to the loggers. Competitors take at least two and a half hours, and up to seven hours to complete the arduous course.
