As the name suggests, the day of cycling consists of a 100km (62-mile) race between the two tourist towns of Rotorua and Taupo. The countryside is magnificent along the way, and the route is largely trouble free, following peaceful country lanes, forestry roads and parts of the famous Ironman course. The end mark of the race takes cyclists into a dramatic parkland setting, ideal for relaxing after all the excitement. Around 4,000 riders take part in this popular event, and the winner takes home a generous cash prize.
