In the very centre of North Island, Lake Taupo is the largest lake in Australasia. Around it, the Ultimate Team Relay is run by more than 5,000 competitors each year, in a team building exercise par excellence. Each team consists of 10 to 18 members, either running or walking to complete the 18 legs of 5.2km (3.25 miles) to 14.4km (9 miles) around the lake. With certain categories taking place through the night, this is one of the most scenic and sociable events of its kind in New Zealand. Big cash prizes are awarded to winners. Runners gain free entry to a post-race party with live music, in the Great Lake Centre. Supporters have to pay to enjoy the fun
