Waka Ama, racing with outrigger canoes, is one of the world's fastest growing water sports. More than a dozen countries meet to decide the world Sprint Champions, including Tahiti, the United States and Australia. Waka Ama is a very popular participation sport for men and women that each year attracts about 2,000 paddlers who usually bring their family and supporters with them guaranteeing a fun atmosphere. The fibreglass vessels, paddled furiously in exciting and hard-fought contests, are surprisingly quick over the water. The Waka Ama village also hosts a food festival and features a variety of entertainments including an amusement park, exhibitions by traditional Maori and Pacific Islands cultural groups, opening and closing ceremonies and evening concerts
