Cinco de Mayo is celebrated by Mexican communities all over the world and remembers the famous Mexican victory over the supposedly superior French forces in the Battle of Puebla on 5 May 1862. Celebrations are particularly grand in New Mexico itself where practically every town and village marks the occasion with historic presentations, cultural performances, storytelling, live entertainment and plenty of food and drink. This is a great time to visit the region and offers visitors a great introduction to the traditional Latin American lust for life.
