9/12/2009 - 9/13/2009National Heritage Day
Amsterdam,
Netherlands
Amsterdam is famous for the monumental character of its city centre, thanks in large part to the numerous 17th- and 18th-century canalside houses that were built by wealthy merchants. Warehouses, too, are an important part of the fabric of the historic core. On Heritage Day (Monumenten Dag) about 35 of Amsterdam's monuments which are normally closed to the public are opened for free viewings, many of which with guided tours. These architectural and historic gems, typically tall, narrow mansions crowned with varied and elaborate gables, make a unique sightseeing experience. Many of the houses are privately owned and the furnishings alone make a visit worthwhile.
