2/22/2009 - 2/24/2009s-Hertogenbosch Carnival
Various,
Netherlands
The s-Hertogenbosch Carnival or "festival of fools" is celebrated at carnival time in many towns in the Netherlands, especially in the southern provinces of Brabant and Limburg. It's a time for silly costumes, street parades, music, eating and drinking. In this region the festivities often maintain their links with the Catholic church and the origins of Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday, when the last of the fat and other perishable foods were consumed (on Shrove Tuesday) before the season of Lent fasting, which commenced on Ash Wednesday. The festivities of the town of s-Hertogenbosch, capital of Brabant, typify those of the southern provinces
