11/01/2008 - 11/30/2008Arrival of Saint Nicholas & Parade
Amsterdam,
Netherlands
Saint Nicholas (Sinterklaas in Dutch) arrives in Amsterdam by boat (from Spain, and why not?) to the canal across from Saint Nicholas Church (Sint Nikolaaskerk). Church bells ring out and deafening salutes fill the air as the mayor welcomes the portly, white-bearded saint. A big parade begins at noon, with brass bands, decorated floats, groups of jesters, cycling clowns, and more. Costumed "Zwarte Pieten" (Moorish helpers) throw sweets to the crowds of expectant children who line the streets along the Damrak to the Rembrandtplein, ending at the Leidesplein where Sinterklaas addresses crowds of children and parents from a balcony
