The Dam tot Damloop Run (central square to central square) is the biggest event of its kind in the Netherlands, with runners leaving the centre of Amsterdam and following the course to the centre of Zaandam through the IJ-tunnel. About 30,000 runners take up the challenge, a number of top athletes among them. In addition, some 4,000 children take part in a mini run, which takes place in the centre of Zaandam. Large crowds of up to 200,000 line the route, entertained by many bands and small orchestras. The race is run over 7km (4.5 miles) and 4km (2.5 miles)
