Marshall Islands Travel Tips

Social Conventions
Informal dress is usual for both business and social occasions. Scanty clothing (including topless bathing) is considered offensive. Use of islands, paths, beaches etc may require permission in many areas; it is best to check locally.

International Travel:

Getting There by Air
Continental Micronesia (CS) (website: www.continental.com) stops in Majuro and Kwajalein on its island-hopper service between Guam and Honolulu. Air Nauru (ON) (website: www.airnauru.com.au) also runs flights to the islands from Australia and other pacific nations.

Departure Tax
US$20 on international flights.

Main Airports
Majuro International Airport (MAJ). To/from the airport: There are taxis and hotel transport from the airport to the town.

Getting There by Water
Main port: Majuro.

Several shipping lines regularly service the Marshall Islands, and cruises also stop, although infrequently; more information is available from CenPec (www.rreinc.com).

Government-owned field ships connect the islands within the Marshalls on a regular schedule. Comfortable passenger cabins are available on these ships and arrangements can be made for charter trips.

Cruises sometimes call at Majuro port, but not on a regular basis.

Overview
The following items may be imported into the Marshall Islands by passengers without incurring customs duty:

• 300 cigarettes or 75 cigars or 225g tobacco.
• 2l of alcoholic beverages (alcohol for passengers over 21 years of age only).

Prohibited Imports
Firearms, ammunition, drugs and pornographic materials are not permitted. Birds, animals, fruit and plants need certification from the Quarantine Division of the Ministry of Resources and Development.

Prohibited Exports
Coral, turtle shells and certain other natural resources cannot be exported. Any artifacts or objects of historical value cannot be taken out of the country.

Internal Travel:

Getting Around By Air
Air Marshall Islands (CW) (website: www.airmarshallislands.com) provides regular scheduled internal flights to the atolls in the Marshall Islands and has planes available for charter.

Getting Around by Water
Inter-island cruises are available. Boats can be hired for sightseeing, diving, snorkeling, waterskiing and fishing.

Getting Around by Road
Traffic drives on the left. All the main roads are paved.

Taxi: Plentiful and cheap. Generally used on a seat-sharing basis.

Car hire: These are usually Japanese sedans.

Regulations: The minimum driving age is 18.

Documentation: A national driving license is valid for 30 days.
