    Location
    Mediterranean, south of Sicily.

    Republic. Gained independence from the UK in 1964.

    Maltese (a Semitic language) and English are the official languages. Italian is also widely spoken.

    Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi since 2004.

    President Fenech Adami since 2004.

    Recent History
    Lawrence Gonzi took office in March 2004, a few weeks before Malta’s entry into the European Union. Mr Gonzi said Malta should seize the opportunities afforded by its imminent EU membership and promised to boost tourism and to create favorable conditions for investment. Since joining the EU, Malta has suffered increasing problems with immigation. The country joined the eurozone on 1 January 2008.

    Roaming agreements exist with most international mobile phone companies. Coverage is good.

    There are a few Internet cafes.

    Media
    Daily and weekly publications appear in both Maltese and English. Italian television and radio are also received. Italian TV channels are still very popular in Malta.
