1/01/2010 - 12/31/2010In Guardia
Valletta,
Malta
The star-shaped fort of St Elmo, built by the Knights of Malta in 1552, is named after the patron saint of mariners. Within its battle-scarred walls, a ceremony from Malta's illustrious history is re-enacted on approximately 28 Sundays each year. The episode dates back to the days of the Knights of St John when a parade was held whereby the Grand Bailiff, a high-ranking military officer of the Order of St John, would inspect the garrison to ensure that the fort was in a high state of alertness. The soldiers would be required to demonstrate their military skills with a number of exercises. Now called "In Guardia", the parades have been resurrected for tourists with around 90 officers and men-at-arms in full period costume and armour. They perform a series of military drills in great courtyard inside the fort, faithfully replicating the old ceremonies.
