Il Bandu are the heralds in historic military costume who bear the ceremonial banners, or 'paji' that are awarded to the winners of horse races. The paji are paraded in a procession through the streets of Valletta, Mdina and Rabat before being blessed in front of the shrine of St Paul in Saqqaja. Il Bandu re-appear at carnival and other fiestas throughout the year.
