    Similar to northwest Europe. The government is proposing a law on the protection of non-smokers with a smoking ban in publicly-accessible premises and in public administration buildings, this entails a smoking ban in restaurants in principle.

    Getting There by Air
    The nearest international airport is Zurich (see Switzerland section for further information).

    Main Airports
    Zurich (ZRH) (Kloten) (website: www.zurich-airport.com) is in Switzerland
    and approximately 115km (70 miles) from Vaduz. To/from the airport: Travel to Liechtenstein from Zurich can be continued by rail and bus or road. An autoroute connects the city with Liechtenstein (first exit: Balzers; further exits: Vaduz, Schaan, Bendern and Ruggell). Facilities: Duty-free shops, restaurants/bars, banks, bureau de change, nursery and car hire.

    Getting There by Rail
    The best rail access is via the Swiss border stations at Buchs (SG) or Sargans (easier and closer when coming from Zurich) or the Austrian station at Feldkirch. All are well served by express trains and connected with Vaduz by bus. From Buchs it takes only 15 minutes by bus or 10 minutes by taxi.

    Getting There by Road
    An autoroute (N13) runs along Liechtenstein’s Rhine frontier to Lake Constance, Austria and Germany in the north, and southwards past Chur towards St Moritz. To the west, there are autoroutes to Zurich, Berne and Basel.

    Eurotunnel (tel: 0870 535 3535, in the UK; website: www.eurotunnel.com) operates trains 24 hours a day through the Channel Tunnel between Folkestone in the UK (with direct access from the M20) and Calais in France, from where you can drive to Liechtenstein.     Traffic drives on the right.

    Bus: There is an extensive and reliable bus system. For further information, contact Liechtenstein Bus Anstalt (tel: 236 6310; website: www.lba.li).

    Taxi: There are numerous companies on call throughout the country.

    Car hire: Main international car hire companies are represented, as well as local firms.

    Regulations: The minimum age for car hire is 21 years. The speed limit is 120kph (74mph) on motorways and 100kph (61mph) on motorways in built-up areas; 80kph (49mph) on open roads; and 50kph (31mph) in towns.

    Documentation: A full national driving license is required.
