5/15/2008 - 5/15/2008Kanda Festival
Tokyo,
Japan
Black and gold portable shrines (mikoshi) are carried through the streets of the old Kanda district by teams of local residents in traditional costume. Apart from bringing good luck to the neighbourhood, the festival commemorates the establishment of the shogunate which made Tokyo (Edo) the capital instead of Kyoto. Traditionally, this was an opportunity for the shopkeepers and artisans of the Shitamachi area to compete with the aristocrats of the "upper city". The Kanda Festival is related to the Hie Festival and they take place in alternate years
