3/01/2008 - 3/31/2008Fire Festival of Mount Aso
Kumamoto,
Japan
Held in March close to the Aso Shrine on the volcanic Mount Aso, the annual Fire Festival is an incredible spectacle that sees participants twirl burning bales of hay around their heads. The ceremony is a purification ritual which dates back to the time when the plains would be set on fire to make way for new growth. The festival opens with a mesmerising drumming display early in the evening.
