Imagine a kind of religious handball match. The ball is 30cm (1ft) in diameter and made of solid wood. The teams line up in loin cloths after purification at Hakozaki Hachiman Shrine. One team represents the land and the other the sea. If the land wins, there will be a good harvest. If the sea wins, there will be a good catch.
