Kyoto,

Kurama is a charming village with hot springs in the mountains north of Kyoto. Once a year it erupts into a sea of fire as young men in loin-cloths carry gigantic 5m (15ft) torches called 'tiamatsu' through the streets to Yuki Shrine (Yuki-jinja) to the beat of great taiko drums. There are smaller torches for the children. This 1,000-year-old ritual is said to mark the establishment of a god at Yuki Shrine to protect the Buddhist Kurama temple farther up the mountain. The best place to watch the action is from the foot of the steps at the gate to Kurama Temple, but get there early.
