The ancient city and former capital of Kyoto is surrounded by mountains and at the Daimonji Bonfire, huge Japanese characters are set ablaze in these hills. The bonfires are also called 'Gozan Okuribi'. They are associated with the Buddhist summer festival of Obon, which is celebrated throughout Japan.
