8/14/2008 - 8/15/2008Lantern Festival of Kasuga Shrine
Nara,
Japan
3,000 lanterns of bronze and stone are lit in the Apple Garden of Kasuga Taisha, Nara's most celebrated shrine. The lanterns are donated by worshippers at the shrine. They included the powerful Fujiwara clan, who established the shrine in the year 768. The sense of timelessness of the lanterns against the night sky among the forests at the foot of Mt Mikasa is increased by the stately rhythms of the ancient courtly dance known as 'bugaku'.
