8/01/2009 - 8/31/2009Tokyo Fireworks Festival
Tokyo,
Japan
The first Tokyo Fireworks Festival took place in 1733 to commemorate the deaths caused by a famine in the previous year. Known as 'Hanabi Taiki', the displays of this festival take place all over Japan, usually on a Saturday evening. About a dozen Hanabi Taiki take place in Tokyo itself. At the Tokyo Bay Hanabi Taiki in August, two leading fireworks companies compete for the most spectacular effects before huge crowds. The Sumida River firework display is the largest though, and most accessible, with the additional attraction of stalls and kiosks selling mulled sake and Japanese specialities. Over the course of an hour, countless rockets are launched from the banks of the river into the Tokyo sky in one of the most spectacular displays anywhere. Getting on for a million people turn up at Sumida Park, creating a bustling, party atmosphere.
