You may well have seen the vermilion gateway to Itsukushima Shrine rising majestically from the waters of the Inland Sea. During the Kangensai music festival, courtly life of the Heian period returns to this most serene of Japan's shrines. Colourful boats pass under the gateway (torii) filled with musicians and dancers of the period. For 800 years Itsukushima has celebrated the goddess of the sea by ferrying her portable shrine (mikoshi) across the water from its home in the holy island of Miyajima to Jigozen Shrine on the Japanese mainland, accompanied by hundreds of fishing boats decorated with lanterns.
