The two highlights of the Kamakura Festival are Shizuka-no-mai and Yabusame. Shizuka-no-mai is a traditional dance at the Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gu Shrine. Yabusame is an exhibition of archery on horseback in a lane in the shrine's precincts. Both events are set at the height of the cherry blossom season, when this ancient shrine is looking at its splendid best.

Getting there:
Rail: JR Yokosuka Line from Tokyo Shinagawa is 1 hour to Kamakura. For getting around Kamakura, use the picturesque coastal single track Enoshima Electric train (Eno-den).
Foot: From Kamakura Station you are already in the shrine precincts. From the station's east exit turn left at traffic lights and you will see a 6m (20ft) torii or gateway flanked by stone dogs. The shrine is a short walk from there.
