Nara,
Japan
This festival of dance at one of the three most important Shinto shrines in Japan includes everything from the ancient kagura Shinto shrine dance to saru gaku, which is as democratic as music hall. The dances, and the accompanying displays of samurai archery on horseback, and sumo wrestling, are primarily for the pleasure of the guardian deity of the shrine. He is transported by the head priest from the shrine to a temporary sanctuary at its gates, in a mysterious and moving ceremony.
