11/01/2008 - 11/30/2008Tori-no-ichi (Rooster Fair)
Tokyo,
Japan
More a market than a festival, Tori-no-ichi (Day of the Rooster) is the time to buy a lucky rake (kumade). These colourful traditional rakes are guaranteed to bring wealth for the coming year and if you buy one, the rake seller will sing out a blessing on you. You will be quite literally raking it in. Tens of thousands of visitors are attracted to the 200 stalls set up each year at the Otori Shrine. When a rake is sold, it is common practice for the seller and buyer to clap their hands rhythmically in harmony with one another (known as tejime). Quite a few people visit the fair just to hear the lively shouts which always accompany these hand clapping ceremonies. They are open on the two (or three) "days of the rooster" in November. Days of the rooster occur every 12 days in November, which means that the month has at least two or even three days of the rooster, depending on the year
