8/06/2008 - 8/06/2008Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony
Hiroshima,
Japan
The City of Hiroshima commemorates the dropping of the atomic bomb. The ceremony remembers those who lost their lives in the hope that the experience of the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki will never be repeated. The Mayor of Hiroshima delivers the Peace Declaration during the ceremony, and this is sent to every country in the world to express Hiroshima's devout wish that nuclear weapons be banned. In a moment that loses none of its impact with the passing years, the Peace Bell tolls at 0815, the moment the atomic bomb was dropped in 1945, the city's air raid sirens come eerily to life, and the whole city and its visitors observe one minute's silence in the hope that the future will learn from the past.
