Each year 12 young women are chosen to transplant the first rice seedlings in the paddy fields of Sumiyoshi Shrine, accompanied by traditional music and rice-planting folk songs. This ritual is claimed to be over 1,700 years old and the shrine itself is august enough to have the nickname of 'Sumiyossan'.
