5/11/2008 - 5/12/2008Open-Air Torchlight Noh Performance
Nara,
Japan
The ancient Japanese dance-drama Noh is given heightened mystery in this open-air performance by the light of bonfires and torches at Kofukuji Temple. Noh developed in the Muromachi Era (1333-1568). To see its distinctive masks reflecting the firelight is a surreal experience that is not to be missed. The temple itself has tales to tell; originally built in Kyoto in 669 by the powerful Fujiwara clan, it was moved to Nara when it became the imperial capital in 710.
