1/06/2009 - 1/06/2009Epiphany Celebration (Byzantine Rite)
Piana degli Albanesi,
Italy
In the late 15th century when Turks were marauding the Balkans, many Albanian communities were welcomed to Southern Italy. One of these established the village of Piana degli Albanesi near Palermo. The people integrated with the locals but preserved their historic Greek Orthodox traditions and even their language. Today their traditional, living culture can still be witnessed, especially on feast days such as Epiphany, 12 days after Christmas. This is an important date in the Greek Orthodox calendar when the people of Piana degli Albanesi celebrate with all the pomp and majesty of the Eastern Byzantine church, complete with a re-enactment of the Baptism of Christ. Hand made traditional costumes are worn and elaborate religious rites are observed.
