9/01/2008 - 9/30/2008Madonna di Piedigrotta Festival
Naples,
Italy
The Madonna of Piedigrotta is brought out of her resting place in the church named after her once in every 50 years. Celebrations in her name, though, take place on a regular basis, once each year. A very moving celebration, the emphasis is upon the slow return of the procession to the shrine, after a visit to the shore where a boat parade takes place at Mergellina. This reflects the legend that the image of the Madonna was rediscovered by fishermen. There are church services and masses in honour of the Madonna, and the occasion is also marked by theatrical performances and music concerts.
