Pistoia is a beautiful medieval city and provincial capital with a stunning main square that is fringed with tiered arcades in striped marble. This is the scene of the city's outdoor July Festival, foremost event of which is Pistoia Blues. A regular festival since 1980, its true blues roots have evolved to encompass broader rock styles, but there has always been a handful of blues greats playing alongside headline bands such as Jethro Tull, Deep Purple, Patti Smith, Van Morrison, Ry Cooder, Chuck Berry, BB King and Jerry Lee Lewis. Simultaneous performances take place at a second stage nearby and some concerts are held in the Little Theatre.
