6/01/2008 - 9/30/2008Roman Summer
Rome,
Italy
Warm summer evenings in Rome are filled with the exciting possibilities of 'Estate Romana' - the three-month-long Roman Summer festival. Classical music, jazz and rock, film and theatre take place mainly at open-air venues throughout the city. Concerts are staged at archaeological sites and monuments. Church steps and piazzas provide a stage for all kinds of musical performances. City parks host entire music festivals and open-air screens are set up on the River Tiber Island and on the top of Gianicolo Hill, showing popular late night movies. Indeed much of Rome becomes a stage from June through to September. Theatrical performances take place in the ruins at Ostia Antica; the Baths of Caracalla become a classical music venue. The entire Foro Italico becomes an entertainment space with rock concerts, discos, and a huge open-air gymnasium.
