8/13/2009 - 8/16/2009Siena Palio
Sienna,
Italy
Italy's most famous and spectacular festival event is a hectic bareback horse race around the sloping square of 'Piazza del Campo' in Siena. The very first Palio was run on August 16, 1656 and the tradition lives on to celebrate the miraculous apparition of the Virgin Mary near the old houses that belonged to Provenzano Salvani. A secular tradition connected with the origin of the Contradas of Siena (the districts into which the town is divided), the Palio, after months of preparation, is always hotly contested and the various contradas put on parties afterwards that usually last for days.
