Commemorated throughout Israel, Tisha b'Av is a religious day of fasting and a day of remembrance and mourning for the tragedies that have befallen the Jewish people. Primarily, the day commemorates the Destruction of the First and Second Temples (the First was destroyed by the Babylonians in 586BC and the Second by the Romans in AD70). The day is observed on the ninth day of the Hebrew month of Av (July or August) and is a holiday throughout the country.
