A national holiday that is recognised throughout the country, the day celebrates Israeli independence and the formation of the state of Israel on 7 May 1948. However, the actual day it is celebrated on is governed by the Jewish calendar and shifts from year to year. Although a day of celebration, the day also remembers those that lost their lives in the struggle for independence and is marked by prayers and religious services.
