An important event that is celebrated throughout Bali, Nyepi is the Hindu Day of Silence and the Hindu New Year. On the night before the celebrations, it is traditional to clean the home, cook meals and do all the necessary preparations before the silence and inactivity of the following day. On the day of Nyepi, all businesses, restaurants, and entertainments are closed and the whole island stays silent and indoors for a day of contemplation. Although foreign hotel guests are exempt from the strict rules of Nyepi, many choose to participate in the same acts of silence and self-reflection
