Held in the spectacular Hoysala temples of Belur and Halebid in Karnataka, Hoysala Mahotsava is a festival of traditional dance and music. The temples were built on the orders of the Hoysala king to commemorate an important military victory in AD1117. They are adorned with incredible stone carvings and sculptures depicting gods and scenes from the battle. The temple complex was added to and embellished by successive rulers.

Getting there:
Road: The nearest major town is Hassan, 200km (125 miles) west of Bangalore from which Belur is 42km (26 miles) away and Halebid is just 18km (11 miles).
Bus: Karnataka Tourism runs a regular bus service from Bangalore to Belur and Halebid.
