Celebrated in the first Muslim month of Hijra, Muharram is an Islamic festival that commemorates the martyrdom of the Prophet Mohammed's grandson, Hazrat Imam Hussein. Observed mainly by the Shia Muslim community, celebrations take place in Muslim communities throughout India and are accompanied by processions and prayer meetings. As a sign of mourning and their devotion to God, some devotees carry out penances or inflict wounds on themselves. The period of Muharram usually ends with a special meal.
