12/01/2009 - 12/31/2009Konark Dance Festival
Konark,
India
Held each December, the Konark Dance Festival is a celebration of classical dance and music traditions and attracts performers from across India. One of the country's great 'melas' or celebrations, the event includes a large crafts market, food and drink stalls and other cultural displays and exhibitions. The festival takes place in the stunning Konark Sun Temple (also known as the 'Black Pagoda') which was built in AD1278 by the Ganga King Narasimha Deva. Although parts of the original structure have now collapsed, this is nonetheless one of the finest structures still surviving from this period in the country and is worth a visit for this alone.
