8/08/2009 - 8/08/2009Nehru Trophy Boat Race
Kerala,
India
The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is one of the most important, not to mention most colourful, boat races in Kerala. Held on the Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha, this popular event draws fans and spectators from across the region. The impressive-looking snake boats, known as 'chundan valloms', take to the water in a bid to win the Nehru Trophy which was donated by the late Indian Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, in 1952 when the first race was held. A great atmosphere pervades the event and there are plenty of attractions for visitors on dry land too.
