Held on the first day of the month of Medam in the Malayalam calendar, the state of Kerala and surrounding areas celebrate the day of Vishu. The day marks the sun's arrival in the zodiac of Mesha and is the start of the New Year which is celebrated with religious ceremonies and rituals. It's traditional to share a large and lavish meal with friends, families and loved ones and the day is usually capped off with loud and equally lavish fireworks displays which can be heard ringing out all over the state. It's customary to give money to the poor and needy on this day.
