Not only celebrated by India's estimated 26 million Christians, Christmas is a popular event that takes over the whole country regardless of faith. Each region celebrates the occasion in its own particular way, but wherever you go, expect to see all the trimmings typical of Christmas celebrations in the West including decorated trees, light displays, nativity scenes, present giving, church services, carol singing, parties and special events and celebrations. The main church service takes place on Christmas Day itself and usually lasts for several hours.
