India
Gandhi Jayanti celebrates the anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi who is viewed by many as the Father of the Indian Nation. Born on 2 October 1869, Mahatma Gandhi's campaign of peaceful resistance brought an end to British rule leading to Indian independence. Ceremonies and prayers are offered at venues throughout the country and there is a special service in Delhi at the Gandhi Samadhi at Rajghat. In respect of Gandhi's steadfast belief in the simple life, this is not an ostentatious and flamboyant affair, but it is a day of immense pride and a celebration of the country's national identity
