Known as the Lourdes of the East, the Roman Catholic Church in Velankanni is a deeply symbolic site that attracts thousands of religious pilgrims throughout the year. Each September it celebrates the Velankanni Church Festival which honours the shrine which was erected by Portuguese sailors in the 16th century who are said to have been saved from a ferocious storm by the Virgin Mary.
