9/03/2008 - 9/03/2008Ganesh Chaturthi
India
Dedicated to the elephant-headed god Lord Ganesh (the son of Shiva), Ganesh Chaturthi is the spectacular end to an 11-day festival of celebrations. During this period, devotees offer prayers to Lord Ganesh and there are a number of cultural and religious demonstrations ranging from ritual music performances to storytelling and poetry recitals. On the final day of the celebrations, a large model of Lord Ganesh is carried through the streets before being taken into the river which is accompanied by great ceremony and fanfare. Although celebrated throughout the country, the Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations are particularly spectacular in Maharashtra
